CFL Light Bulbs and LED Light Bulbs

Two of the best energy saving light bulbs are CFL (Compact Fluorescent) and LED (Light Emitting Diode). Both of these types are becoming more and more popular as home owners realize the tremendous energy saving benefits as a result of using these bulbs. While CFL and LED cost more than the conventional incandescent bulbs, they prove to last much longer which will mean that you will need to replace them less. This means that in the long run, you will be saving money!
CFL CFL bulbs are smaller versions of conventional fluorescent bulbs. They are a great option because they save energy by not producing as much heat as an incandescent bulb and they last much longer than incandescent bulbs too. In fact, CFL's use 1/3 the electricity and last up to 10 times as long as incandescent bubs. A single 18 watt CFL used in place of a 75 watt incandescent can save about 570 kWh over its lifetime. At 8 cents per kWh, that equates to a $45 savings, or in other words, a savings that is actually worth it! Some worry about using CFL bulbs in that they have small amounts of mercury. This poses no risk or danger unless the bulb is broken, which even then does not pose any major risk if cleaned and disposed of properly.
LED LED are the bulbs of the future. These bulbs are less popular than CFL but are quickly gaining popularity as they become more available for residential lighting needs. Over time, as the technology advances, the prices will probably become more affordable for most homeowners. The major drawback to LED is that they are currently very expensive. The best characteristic of LED bulbs is their extremely long life span, lasting 50,000 to 60,000 hours; that means you will hardly even have to change these bulbs! LED bulbs are preferred by some compared to CFL bulbs because the LED bulbs do not contain mercury. LED bulbs are unique in that they are small and are extremely energy efficient. In fact, they use only 2-10 watts of electricity (1/3 to 1/30 of incandescent or CFL bulbs).
CFL light bulbs and LED lights bulbs provide excellent alternatives to conventional incandescent bulbs. Try one of these light bulbs and you wil surely see the energy and money saving benefits!
